This is my third pair of Nike Tailwind shoes. I still have a pair of Tailwind 2's and a pair of Tailwind 4's. I tried the Tailwind 8 for an upcoming trip to Europe and found that these are even more comfortable than the earlier versions!
I am no longer a runner due to arthritis. I wear a size 13 shoe in most brands, but a size 14 in these. (As an additional point of reference, in Nike Air Force 1 shoes I need a size 15). The architecture of the Tailwinds includes large plastic air bubbles that you can see along the edges of the sole. This gives the shoe an incredible amount of cushioning, and especially when your heel strikes the walking surface. Perfect for people like me with a damaged meniscus and arthritis. I can walk in them all day without my feet getting tired and sore.
The shoe uppers are made of a mesh fabric which allows your feet to breathe and stay cool even on a hot day. Another feature is the new style Nike laces. They are not traditional "flat" laces but a woven material, that grabs and holds much better than traditional shoe laces. This lets you adjust the tension across your foot all the way up the laces. I like them a little looser in the toe area and tighter across the arch area, and they stay that way when I adjust the laces appropriately. They also stay tied much better than other laces.
You will notice what look like four white "stringers" running down the sides from the lace area towards the sole. These supply an amazing amount of support for the sides of the feet in spite of the lightweight mesh fabric structure. Very comfortable and substantial support!
I have high arches and have always replaced the arch support insoles in all my sneakers with better arch support inserts, like these: Spenco PolySorb Heavy Duty Insole - Men's 12-13
These make all the difference in the world in any pair of sneakers!
My wife is also on her third pair of Nike Tailwinds and loves them for walking shoes. After trying all kinds of "walking shoes", we are so glad we finally found these!
